A light to brighten a beacon of hope

We have in our country more than half a million children who are living a life of uncertainties.

The amount of child labor is almost 0.79 Million
0.45 Million children works in a dangerous condition
1.0 Million are street children
0.5 Million children work in households.

According to a research done by the BBS, almost 44% children are addicted to smoking and almost 41% cannot sleep or even take a bath. 35% children do not have proper sanitation. From the research it is seen that 80% street children does different sorts of job to obtain the least amount of food for the day. It shows 85% as not having any winter clothing. During illness almost 54% does not have anyone to take care off. 75% cannot afford to go to a doctor if they are sick, and finally almost 19% of them are harassed everyday by the law enforcing agencies.

This terrifying statistics clearly states that maximum children in the country face a very grim future or in other words they have no future at all. These children are like dry leaves falling off silently in front of our eyes. Who knows how many Einsteins, Nazruls, Rokeyas are dropping out in the unknown dark alleys of slums!

We know we cannot stand beside them. But what if we stand beside them with whatever little means we have or manage to have? For an answer to this question we approached the rail line slum in Isdair. Everyday from 8 in the morning almost 50 children take their education till class 3. Besides children other girls & boys from the slum take work based education till 5 in the evening. We teach them how to sow in a sewing machine, use computer and learn graphic design beside reading & writing. Also there is a “Primary English Spoken Class” once a week. These are taught by 8 teachers on different shifts. Four of them are salary based employee and 4 of them are volunteers. Once a week there is music & art class as well. There computing class 3 days a week as well. Our goal is to build up a fun loving education so that these children do not lose interest in going to school as they are working as well.

To run the school, all the expenses are borne by some of our well-wishers. These financial help somehow covers the salary and house rents for every month. Besides some of them are providing pencils, copies & some are providing winter clothes for the children. Some are also giving “Health Camp” once a month to provide free medical treatment and medicines for the people in the slum. Finally the locals have taken the responsibility of taking care of the school room. Some of them are also providing small amount of financial help as well.

So, we believe it is possible!

It is possible to weave a dream. Keeping that in mind we started our journey, a journey where we can help build the dream of these prospectus children and we believe this initiative is not for us only; it’s for every responsible human being.

‘সবার জন্য মানবিক শিক্ষা চাই’ এই শ্লোগানকে সামনে রেখে ‘সমগীত পাঠশালা’ নারায়ণগঞ্জে তার পথচলা শুর“ করেছে। চাষাড়া রেল স্টেশন থেকে পায়ে হেঁটে ১০ মিনিটের পথ পের“লেই ইসদাইর রেলক্রসিং। তার মিনিট খানেক আগেই হাতের ডান পাশে রেল লাইনের পাশে একটা টিনের ঘর ভাড়া নিয়ে চলছে সমগীতের স্কুল কার্যক্রম। প্রতিদিন বিকাল ৫টা থেকে রাত ৮টা পর্যন্ত চলে স্কুল। রেললাইনের দু’পাশ ঘেঁষে গড়ে ওঠা শত শত বস্তি ঘরগুলোতে যে অধিকার বঞ্চিত শিশুরা রয়েছে তাদের অধিকাংশ এখনো কোনো স্কুলে যায় না, কেউ সরকারি প্রাথমিক বিদ্যালয়ে পড়ছে, আর বাকিরা সস্তায় নিজেদের শ্রম বিক্রি করে চলে। বস্তির এই শিশুদের জন্যই খুব ক্ষুদ্র আকারে হলেও মানবিক শিক্ষা দানের লক্ষ্যে সমগীত সংস্কৃতি প্রাঙ্গণ এই স্কুল গড়ে তুলেছে। এ বছর সমগীত পাঠশালার লক্ষ্য শিশুদের বাংলা, অংক এবং ইংরেজী প্রাথমিক শিক্ষা প্রদান করা। সহজ পাঠদানের জন্য পাঠশালার শিক্ষকদের দ্বারা তৈরি নিজস্ব বই রয়েছে। আর পাঠদান করছেন ৩জন বেতনভুক্ত শিক্ষকসহ স্বে”ছাসেবী আরো ৫/৬ জন। ছাত্রছাত্রীর সংখ্যা ৪০ জন। স্কুলটি চলছে মূলত সমগীত-এর শুভানুধ্যায়ী বন্ধুদের মাসিক চাঁদা এবং কারো কারো এককালীন অনুদানের মাধ্যমে। আগামী বছরে পাঠশালার পরিকল্পনা রয়েছে যদি আরো আরো বন্ধু-শুভানুধ্যায়ীদের কাছ থেকে আর্থিক অনুদান পাওয়া যায় তবে এ স্কুলটিকে বস্তির সুবিধা বঞ্চিত শিশুদের জন্য একটি নিয়মিত স্কুলে রূপান্তরিত করা। যেখানে সেই শিশুদেরকে মানবিক এবং অবশ্যই মানসম্মত উন্নত শিক্ষায় শিক্ষিত করার লক্ষ্যে আরো একধাপ এগিয়ে যাবে। শুধু প্রয়োজন সমগীত-এর পাশে আরো বন্ধু-শুভানুধ্যায়ীদের এগিয়ে আসার। সমগীত বিশ্বাস করে এরকম আরো অনেক ছোট ছোট উদ্যোগ পারে সমাজটাকে ভেতর থেকে পাল্টে দিতে।
