Institute of Leather Engineering & Technology , University of Dhaka is an educational institution in Hazaribagh, Dhaka, Bangladesh that provides education related to the art and technology of making leather & footwear. The Institute offers graduate courses by the University of Dhaka, certificate courses.

Institute of Leather Engineering & Technology(ILET), the only educational institution of this kind in the country regarding the human resource development in the field of Leather, Footwear and Leather Products Technology. since 1997, BCLET has started, then from the session 2011-12 it became an independent institute of DU as ILET, it is explored its horizon in the respective field with the acquisition, installation and application of modern technology. Now it has become one of the leading Engineering Institute in the country. For its newly acquired and adapted modern technology in concerned fields, numbers of students are getting attracted for studying over here. Along with modern Engineering & technical facilities, students are becoming more familiar with Institute of Leather Engineering & Technology , University of Dhaka because of increased demands in national and international job markets. ILET is committed to produce skilled Engineers & Technologists to compete the world job market. Apart from its acquired modern technology, academic activity also shares the responsibility to keep this commitment and to continue its stepping ahead.

History:

Bangladesh College of Leather Engineering & Technology prides itself has the oldest technical institute in the than East Pakistan. Just after the division of Indian sub continent the ministry of industry has approved on 15th August 1947 to set up East Bengal tanning institute for the human resource development of leather and leather products sector. Officially, the institute was founded on 10th June 1949 and the academic activities of this institute started from the year 1952 after necessary infra structure development. Later, the institute was remaining as the East Pakistan leather technology and involved with the development of skilled oriented manpower for leather and leather product industry. During Pakistan period the Institute was failed to catch necessary services to the industry due to various socio-political reasons. To provide better academic and educational facilities, the institute has been transferred to the ministry of education and placed under the administrative control of the technical education in 1967.

After liberation, the institute was recognized as Bangladesh institute of leather technology and was involved with diploma, certificate and artisan levels education until 1979. On realizing the economic importance of value added manufacturing of leather, the government of Bangladesh has introduced graduate course B.Sc. Tech in leather under the university of Dhaka from the 1979-80 academic session and the institute was upgraded as Bangladesh College of Leather Technology.

Government of Bangladesh has also realized the economic return of manufactured export based on leather and take necessary measures for industrialization towards value-added manufacturing in the form of footwear and leather products to meet the supply of technical personnel in various level for this potential sector.

On 21st April,2010 the name of the college has officially been changed into Bangladesh College of Leather Engineering and Technology.


And Finally On 2011 the name of this college has officially been changed into has officially been changed into Institute of Leather Engineering & Technology , University of Dhaka.


Road to the Engineering:

In the year 2008 all the department was added to the Faculty of Engineering of University of Dhaka. But at first it was said that only new academic students will be certified as Engineer not all the current students. The all the students asked the academic members to submit the proposal for the engineering for all current students, but they didn't. Moreover they said that it was impossible to submit that to the University. After a few months in April 2009 the students boycotted all the class and went to movement. At that time the college was closed to stop the movement. At last in the month of June 2009, after a huge students' pressure the academic members was made bound to do the job. After that movement all the current students was said granted as engineer.


Academics

It now offers a four year B.Sc degree in Leather Engineering, Footwear Engineering and Leather Products Engineering under the University of Dhaka. From the year 2009 ,all the running students of the college are getting the degree of B.Sc in Leather Engineering, Footwear Engineering and Leather Products Engineering.Thanks every body

Institute of Leather Engineering & Technology (ILET) is an educational institute of University of Dhaka. ILET is a constituent Institute of The University of Dhaka under the faculty of Engineering and Technology.

The degree to be awarded by the University of Dhaka shall be designated as Bachelor of Leather engineering, Bachelor of Footwear engineering and Bachelor of Leather Products engineering.
